I don't remember exactly how this idea came about, but we were lying in the dark laughing, which is how a lot of silly ideas are born. The point is, I have always been very bad at history.
As an adolescent I liked Science and Math, and I liked English (so long as we were reading fiction), but I thought History was dull. (Relatedly, I'm also pretty bad at geography and languages.) As an adult I realize that I now have a massive hole in my understanding of the world, and yet when I try to patch it up nothing will stick.
Thus: Jake and I shall undertake a chronological watching of historical-ish movies in an attempt to build some sort of historical framework in my mind onto which I can pin things.
And I'll tell you about it here. (Feel free to build me a prettier webpage.)
The movies on the list were crowd-sourced from my friends via facebook. I'm not sure yet whether we'll watch them all. We will continue to be open to suggestions so long as we haven't passed the suggestions' historical time frame. As you can tell, historical accuracy isn't a prerequisite to movie-watching. If a movie even just gives some sense of setting, I'm open to watching it. This is in part because I still think of history as being pretty dry, and I'd like to watch an animated Disney movie now and then.
I've come up with a colour-coding system which I may intermittently apply. Movies that are pretty accurate
will be green, those that aren't very accurate but still give a good idea of a particular time
will be orange, and movies that are blatantly fictional
will be red.
